Comments:—Solvers found this a difficult puzzle—only 139 correct solutions. “Stock,” favoured by several, cannot be accepted for 28 dn.; not even with a shove will it fit both parts of the clue. (Actually none of its advocates would in any case have threatened the prize-winners.). Several others failed over “baffy” and “bap.” Two of the H.C.s used the same passage as Mr. Phillips and Mr. Reeves, but their presents, though elaborate, lacked the simple appropriateness of the whisky; after all, the stuff, not the receptacle, is the thing! X. thanks the rather select entry for some good laughs and reciprocates many expressions of good wishes for 1947.
