The Crossword Centre Clue-Writing Competition

April Competition Information
MESMERISE (Letters Latent)

Results Information   See results

There is no doubt that it is a little tougher to craft a Letters Latent clue that stands out, and consequently it probably makes the judging process more challenging! So it is hardly surprising that this turned out to be a closely run contest – in fact, probably the closest ever!

Hearty congratulations to Luciano for just squeaking ahead of the pack with his clue that had an excellent surface to deflect the solver from the intended meaning of the definition.

A mere point and a half back in second was Dave P. with another fine construction, well done Dave.

Martin returns to a podium finish after a gap of a couple of years, only a single point back in third!

Finally, a tie for fourth spot, again a mere handful of points further adrift – congratulations Don and for the second month running to Robert Vere!

Mesmerising stuff!

Voting Information

Voting is open until Midnight UK time on Saturday 17th May.

Please award FIVE points maximum to the clue you judge best: FOUR points for second, THREE for third, TWO for fourth, down to ONE point for fifth; but otherwise you may distribute your votes as you see fit including ½ marks for split voting – as long as you award no more than 15 points IN TOTAL and no more than 5 points to any one clue…

…and of course you may NOT VOTE for your own clue!

COMMENTS:

Your comments in general and on individual clues, however much or little you write, are always most welcome! Please remember that if any particular clue or clues do not find favour with you, it is more helpful to offer constructive criticism – many of our members are keen to learn and hone their clue writing skills through our competition – feedback may be useful for their future efforts!

Entry Information

Your challenge for April is a LETTERS LATENT clue to MESMERISE by the closing date of MIDNIGHT UK TIME (BST) WEDNESDAY 30TH APRIL.

Your LETTERS LATENT clue to MESMERISE should contain a definition of the unmutilated word, but the subsidiary indication should refer to the word with one letter (of your choice) missing wherever it occurs.

For instance, if you choose M as your latent letter, then as well as defining MESMERISE, your clue must contain a subsidiary indication that leads to ESERISE. If E is your latent letter then the subsidiary indication must lead to MSMRIS, and so on.

Please start the EXPLANATION of your clue by stating which letter you have chosen to be latent in order to help the judging.
