This one turned out to be probably the closest competition ever! With a diversity of interesting clueing devices on show the points were spread far and wide. The final outcome was a tie for first place – so congratulations to Nick and Neelima for being the double cream that rose to the top. Nick with a well-disguised definition and Neelima constructing one of the comp. anag. &lits. First time at the top – albeit jointly – for both and in fact a debut entry from Neelima so well done indeed!
 
Toby was just 2 points back in 3rd and continued his consistent run with his comp. anag. &lit.
 
A mere 1 point further back in 4th was Vinit, following up his podium finish of last month with another Top 5 spot. Well done!
 
5th place goes to Allan with the clue that made me (and I suspect others!) chuckle most.

Please award FIVE points maximum to the clue you judge best: FOUR points for second, THREE for third, TWO for fourth, down to ONE point for fifth; but otherwise you may distribute your votes as you see fit including ½ marks for split voting – as long as you award no more than 15 points IN TOTAL and no more than 5 points to any one clue…
 
…and of course you may NOT VOTE for your own clue!

Your challenge for July is a STANDARD CRYPTIC clue to VINDALOO(8) by the closing date of MIDNIGHT BST TUESDAY 31st JULY.
 
Remember that whilst you are composing (and pondering) your clue effort, the entry interface allows you to "Save but don't submit". But even if you "Submit this clue" you are still able to amend – or even retract – your entry right up until the end.
