I expected CLOSE to be close – and it was! Just half a point saw Derek Greenwood triumph to become another new name to welcome into the winner's enclosure – well done Derek!

The unlucky runner-up was Tom, but this result continues his fine run of form this year – commiserations Tom.

Third place went to one of the short double definition clues and lifted newcomer Tobias onto the podium with only his second clue entry – hearty congratulations Tobias!

Fourth spot went to regular Barry for his second top 5 finish of the year, and the final podium placing was shared by Margaret (although "Narrow victory for UKIP" may be fast becoming more accurate!!) and Richard Harvey following up his win in the PD competition the previous month.

Well done to all, and as ever with clue writing competitions, the cautionary lesson to sometimes look beyond the obvious!

Voting Information

Voting is open until Midnight UK time on Monday 17th November.

57 clues this month…or should I say 57 entries?

For the first time since the CCCWC entry and voting has been web-based we have identical clues entered by more than one competitor. You can vote for only one of these clues; the other is marked DUPLICATE. At the end of the voting the writers of identical clues will be awarded the same points and position. If you are the writer of one of the clues, you will not be able to vote for either of them. PLEASE NOTE: clues that are nearly identical, but have different punctuation or capitalisation, are not affected, and you can vote for these as normal. As this is the first time this has happened, please let us know if you have any comments on the voting arrangements for future reference when they may be necessary again.

COMMENTS:

Your comments in general and on individual clues, however much or little you write, are always most welcome! Please remember that if any particular clue or clues do not find favour with you, it is more helpful to offer constructive criticism – many of our members are keen to learn and hone their clue writing skills through our competition – feedback may be useful for their future efforts!

Entry Information

Your challenge for October is a STANDARD CRYPTIC clue to CLOSE(5) by the closing date of MIDNIGHT GMT FRIDAY 31ST OCTOBER.

Remember that whilst you are composing (and pondering) your clue effort, the entry interface allows you to "Save but don't submit". But even if you "Submit this clue" you are still able to amend – or even retract – your entry right up until the end.

BUT DON'T FORGET TO CLICK THE "SUBMIT THIS CLUE" BUTTON BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE!

Our primary reference is The Chambers Dictionary 12th Edition (2011), but you may, if you wish, use another dictionary or source, BUT PLEASE STATE SO IN YOUR CLUE'S EXPLANATION.
