Quite a close run thing for the podium places, but the winner nudged some way ahead – nothing corrupt in the voting here!

Hearty congratulations to Mark Webberley who can celebrate his first placing with a first place! An acceptance speech is the tradition I believe.

Tom B pushed his nose in front of the chasing pack – no stranger to the podium, and one of the two that found the Labour anagram indicator.

Third spot sees a return for Richard after a number of years away from CCCWC competition. Welcome back and congrats on hitting the podium with your feet running. Hope we see some more in the coming months.

Sam was the other employer of the Labour anagram indicator and was hoisted into his first top 5 finish also – well done Sam!

Finally a return to the podium for John A after his win at the start of the year – a nice deceptive definition there.

Thanks to all for another fine competition.

Voting Information

Voting is open until Midnight UK time on Monday 15th September.

Please award FIVE points maximum to the clue you judge best: FOUR points for second, THREE for third, TWO for fourth, down to ONE point for fifth; but otherwise you may distribute your votes as you see fit including ½ marks for split voting – as long as you award no more than 15 points IN TOTAL and no more than 5 points to any one clue…

…and of course you may NOT VOTE for your own clue!

COMMENTS:

Your comments in general and on individual clues, however much or little you write, are always most welcome! Please remember that if any particular clue or clues do not find favour with you, it is more helpful to offer constructive criticism – many of our members are keen to learn and hone their clue writing skills through our competition – feedback may be useful for their future efforts!

Entry Information

It has become the tradition to celebrate the publication of a new edition of our bible – The Chambers Dictionary – by choosing to clue a neologism that has been added. Sadly on this occasion we are forced to commemorate the (greylighted) words that astonishingly have been omitted – temporarily we hope, otherwise we shall clue one every month until they are reinstated!

Many will now regard the new Chambers as a corrupt selection, so your challenge for August is a STANDARD CRYPTIC clue to EATANSWILL (10) by the closing date of MIDNIGHT BST SUNDAY 31ST AUGUST.

Remember that whilst you are composing (and pondering) your clue effort, the entry interface allows you to "Save but don't submit". But even if you "Submit this clue" you are still able to amend – or even retract – your entry right up until the end.

BUT DON'T FORGET TO CLICK THE "SUBMIT THIS CLUE" BUTTON BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE!

Our primary reference (has to be!) The Chambers Dictionary 12th Edition (2011), but you may, if you wish, use another dictionary or source, BUT PLEASE STATE SO IN YOUR CLUE'S EXPLANATION.
