Of course the big question was, would this competition be like a Brazil Germany semi final, or more of a close run Argentina Germany final – definitely the latter!

Just one point separated the top two, and then just behind a triple tie for 3rd!

The podium had a very different look to it this month, with some fresh faces on board, so well done to Anthony Bradley, a fairly new competitor, for his inaugural win! Tough luck to Rod Beards, another recent entrant, who managed his first top five placing and just missed out by that one point – ouch!

The trio in joint third were Barry, Martin and Kevin so congratulations to all three.

And in four years time we just might do it all over again…

Entry Information

WORLD CUP SPECIAL CLOSING DATE MIDNIGHT BST MON. 30TH JUNE

It seems like it was only four years ago that we were last celebrating the World Cup with our "Game of Two Halves" – well here we go again!

James Glassonbury lifted the trophy last time round – who'll win the PENALTY SHOOT-OUT this time?

Your World Cup challenge is to compose a clue to any 8-letter word (or phrase) containing the sequence PEN. For example you could choose PENDULUM, HAPPENED, JALAPENO, APPENDIX, LASER PEN,etc.

Your clue must DEFINE the chosen word, but the subsidiary indication must lead to the word with PEN replaced by GOAL, SAVE or MISS, the choice is yours!

For example, from the list above you could choose to define JALAPENO and then use wordplay indicating JALAGOALO, JALASAVEO or JALAMISSO.

Plenty of options to keep you occupied between (or during!) all the upcoming games, and I hope to see more GOALs than MISSes!!

By way of example, here is a crude clue to HAPPENED with a PENalty MISSed to give you an idea.

Awfully dim shapes materialised (HAPPENED/HAPMISSED)

So "materialised" is the definition with DIM SHAPES being an anagram of HAPMISSED.

PLEASE NOTE: as you are defining and indicating two different "things" any link words (such as "in", "with", "for", etc.) between definition and wordplay are not normally accepted and may be marked down.

You may decide to give your clue a World Cup/football flavour or not – the choice is yours!
GOOD LUCK – ENJOY THE FOOTBALL!
