The Crossword Centre Clue-Writing Competition

June Competition Information
Any “Double” Word (6 or more letters) (A Game of Two Halves)

This competition produced a more exciting contest than the World Cup Final itself! The CCCWC Admin Team were glued to the scoreboard in the closing stages as the lead changed hands between the two "finalists". In the end just 1/2 a point separated 1st and 2nd, with the congratulations going to James and commiserations to John. However, the last set of votes that came in swung the scores from a 1/2 point lead for John to that 1/2 point winning margin for James, so congratulations should also go to John for coming so close with what was an excellent clue as well. This goes to show how important all your votes are!

Well done to Mike for snatching 3rd place with his risque effort, and a couple of familiar faces complete the podium – well done Don and Margaret too.

I was unsure whether to set another competition giving you free choice of clue word so soon after last November's FIREWORK competition, but once the idea came to me I found it hard to resist. I am glad because I found the range of thematic words and the resulting clues fascinating reading so thanks to everyone for entering into the spirit! Four years till the next one!

Voting Information

Apologies for the delay in launching the voting for this competition. Voting will now be open until midnight BST Wednesday 28th July.

Please award FIVE points maximum to the clue you judge best: FOUR points for second, THREE for third, TWO for fourth, down to ONE point for fifth; but otherwise you may distribute your votes as you see fit including ½ marks for split voting – as long as you award no more than 15 points IN TOTAL and no more than 5 points to any one clue…

…and of course you should NOT VOTE for your own clue!

COMMENTS:

Your comments in general and on individual clues, however much or little you write, are always most welcome! Please remember that if any particular clue or clues do not find favour with you, it is more helpful to offer constructive criticism – many of our members are keen to learn and hone their clue writing skills through our competition – feedback may be useful for their future efforts!

Entry Information

Now that World Cup fever is gripping…well, the World, here is a special competition to enable us to join in the celebrations!

Your task is to clue any "double" word or phrase of 6 or more letters. By this I mean a word that is made up of two identical halves, e.g. PAWPAW, GEE-GEE, COUSCOUS, DIVIDIVI, QUINAQUINA, DURAN DURAN, BLING BLING etc.,etc. – there is quite a wide choice for you.

Your clue should be a standard crytpic, with a definition of your chosen word, BUT THE SUBSIDIARY INDICATION MUST ONLY LEAD TO ONE HALF OF THE WORD/PHRASE – you can choose which half ;0)

In addition, your clue should contain an extra word that would need to be removed before solving, which starts with the same letter as your chosen clue word. This is intended to help with the final requirement (!) – that the surface reading of the clue should have a football flavour.

If this is all becoming a little complicated, here is a simple (and feeble) example of what is required.

Chosen clue word: MURMUR

Coo, Maradona is getting spirit back (6)

Explanation: extra word is "Maradona", leaving coo=murmur/"rum" reversed.

Please write your explanation in the following format to help with the judging:
MURMUR: Maradona: rum rev.

Hope that all makes sense; any problems email me directly toots@tinyworld.co.uk

GOOD LUCK!
