The Crossword Centre Clue-Writing Competition

September Competition Information
CHARLES THE THIRD

Sometimes we have a close-run competition, sometimes we don't. This was a 'don't'. A runaway winner that very much reminded me of a clue by RJ Hooper that won the Azed competition back in 1977 – the Queen's Silver Jubilee Year, namely -"Year J. Bull lovers E.R.II afresh". Congratulations to Nathan, a third podium of the year.

Mark Webberley takes second place with a neat cryptic definition, which was spotted by another entrant, but the question mark made all the difference. This is Mark's first podium finish since August 2014 – great persistence Mark!

Third spot and a second podium of the year for Steve Hicks with a rather amusing angle on our new monarch!

Fourth place goes to Simon Griew – also his second podium of the year – who utilised a deceptive definition.

Final podium spot goes to goes to John Appleton, continuing his consistent run this year with a fifth podium, using a different sovereign along with a nice anagram.

Thanks to all as ever – bit late with the results this month (apologies) – we are approaching the end of this month's, so get those last minute efforts in!
